Department TW07 - Department of Telecommunications and Information Processing

Contract Limited duration

Degree Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or Master of Science in Computer Science Engineering (or equivalent)

Occupancy rate 100%

Vacancy type Research staff

Job description

The Digital Communications Research Group (DIGCOM), headed by Prof. Heidi Steendam and Prof. Nele Noels, is part of the Telecommunications and Information Processing Department of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at Ghent University. DIGCOM specializes in the analysis and design of signals and signal processing algorithms for communication, positioning and sensors. The application areas of this research include communication in internet-of-things (IoT) networks, indoor positioning, satellite communication, and obstacle detection in autonomous vehicles.
In the context of several projects with other universities and IMEC, the research group is looking for 1 or 2 new PhD students. Your tasks:

  • As a PhD student, you spend at least 90% of your assignment on scientific research in the context of preparing a PhD thesis.
  • Your research within the DIGCOM research group concentrates on the analysis and design of signals and signal processing algorithms for future wireless networks. The focus is on millimeter wave (mmWave) communications and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques.
  • You apply mathematical models and computer simulations to investigate and tackle some of the specific technical challenges that arise in these systems (strong attenuation, high time-selectivity, increased sensitivity to non-idealities).
  • You provide statistical analysis and interpretation of your results.
  • You publish your work in international journals and at international conferences.
  • You collaborate with colleagues within the research group and with researchers from other research groups.
  • You contribute to the educational tasks of the research group within the Bachelor and Master program.

What can we offer you?

  • A doctoral fellowship of 48 months, with compensation according to a competitive salary scale
  • Challenging, creative and constructive environment
  • Unique opportunity to attend scientific conferences, to participate in research projects and to cooperate with companies and research institutions
  • A number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, a bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.

For more information about this vacancy, please contact Prof. Nele Noels (Nele.Noels@UGent.be, +32 (0)9/2643426).

Job profile

This is what we are looking for:

  • You have a degree of Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or Master of Science in Computer Science Engineering (or equivalent).
  • You are eager to conduct research at the academic level with a view to a PhD.
  • You are interested in signal design and signal processing algorithms for digital communication systems.
  • You have excellent analytical skills and critical sense.
  • You are creative, dare to take initiative and can plan and execute tasks independently.
  • You have decent coding skills (Matlab, Python). Experience with writing scientific papers are a plus.
  • You communicate fluently (both written and oral) in English. Knowledge of Dutch is a plus.

How to apply

Interested? Apply by sending your solicitation to Nele.Noels@UGent.be indicating “Application: PhD DIGCOM” in the subject. Your application must include the following documents:

  • your CV and an overview of your study results (merged into one pdf file)
  • your application letter in pdf format
  • a transcript of the required degree. If you have a foreign diploma in a language other than our national languages (Dutch, French or German) or English, please add a translation in one of the mentioned languages.
  • contact details for up to 3 references that we may contact

As Ghent University maintains an equal opportunities and diversity policy, everyone is encouraged to apply for this position.
